Santorum Sweeps Alabama and Mississippi

Santorum wins a hard-fought battles in Alabama and Mississippi. Both states saw tight finishes with Gingrich and Romney close behind. It was unknown who would win going into today's races with all three candidates working hard to be on top.  However, Santorum was able to squeak ahead and win both states, a very important accomplishment given his need for delegates.

Hawaii is also voting today and it is expected to go to Romney.  However, the delegate count in Hawaii is less than half that of each Alabama and Mississippi.

Tonight is certainly not a great night for Romney and camp as he came into today needing to prove that he can win southern states.  He was not able to do that.  Gingrich also had a bad night, despite how he is spinning it.  He has won only two states total and by losing these two, is continuing to prove that he cannot gain momentum.

The next caucus is in Missouri on the 17th.  This is a "beauty contest" meaning that delegates are not actually awarded, but it will be an important contest.
