Mitt Romney, Where Is Your Soul?

We are at a point in the primary where only a few candidates are left.  There have been a 4 state contests and several more are on their way.  Romney has positioned himself as a shrewd candidate with organization and guts to win.  Romney's campaign against Gingrich, which focused on negative ads and keeping Newt riled up, worked splendidly and helped him win in Florida.  Mitt gave one of his best speeches the night of the Florida primary.  He talked about the primary process being uniting instead of dividing.

However, in the days since the primary, Mitt has had a couple of gaffes - saying that he doesn't care about poor people and claiming he wants to increase the minimum wage automatically with cost of living adjustments.  While the first one was more his attempt to emphasize the pain put on the backs of the middle class, he didn't express it very well.  As for the minimum wage issue, this is really a problem in a GOP primary and one that he hopefully will choose to flip-flop on.

So, with both Gingrich and Santorum vying for votes, Romney needs to take his message to the next level.  Primary voters need to see into his soul.  Notice with Gingrich how much his supporters are overlooking?  He has attacked capitalism, thrown a temper tantrum akin to a 3-year old when the negative ads were used against him in Iowa, and promised to have a moon colony in 8 years if elected, and yet his supporters are still hanging on to him because they see him as a bold brand of conservatism needed in Washington.

Due to Gingrich's campaign errors, Romney has benefited.  And, Romney has attempted to show his passion with his great debate performances and singing at stump speeches.  But, what Romney still has not shown is his soul that will drive his decision-making.  He certainly has great management credentials, but what this country needs and what Romney needs to demonstrate is someone who firmly believes with his heart and soul that conservative values are the only answer for us.  This is a battle that must be won in this country and must make its way to the hearts and minds of every American.

Romney has not yet shown us his soul, which has his criticizers believing that he does not have one and is an opportunist.  In reality, he is a hard-working, religious family man who truly does love his country.  But, if he doesn't find a way to connect with potential voters, he may win hollow and heavily-funded primary battles, but he will not win the election, and even worse, he will not have helped us win the conservative argument, which will have an impact for years to come.

  1. Some good points. Remember how wooden Dole was against Clinton in 96? If Mitt gets the nomination, he needs to show some real personality.
