Why Is It A "Compromise" To Balance The Budget?

I've been watching C-Span off and on today and the circus in the House and Senate as Democrat after Democrat has been getting up and claiming that Republicans 1) will not compromise, 2) are being hi-jacked by the Tea Party, and 3) are not appreciating the fact that Dems have pulled a tax increase out of the negotiations.

So, let's take this one at a time:
1) There are times when compromise is good and times when it is not.  This is not one of those times.  We have been spending and spending and spending.  Here we are facing yet another increase in the debt ceiling.  Will it be raised?  Of course.  Will we default on our debt?  Of course not.  The President will not let that happen.

However, as Hannity said on his show yesterday, compromise is how we got here in the first place.  Actually, I would even go further and state that both Republican and Democrat leadership are why we are here.  When we had the majority, we should have not let the moderate arm of the GOP take over the books.  And then, since Obama has been in office, the spending has only gotten much worse. 

I find it humorous that now that Dems don't have control of both houses that they suddenly find compromise a virtue.  Anyone remember Obamacare? 

But, what I really don't understand is why is it considered a compromise to balance the budget?  Why is it a compromise to not spend more than we have?  These are basic, fiscal principals that any real-world company has to adhere to.  Yet, the federal government acts like these are choices we make and then calls it a compromise when they are forced to follow normal fiscal principles that any basic 3rd grader could teach you.  If you don't have the money, you can't spend it!

2)  Yes, the GOP is being heavily influenced by the Tea Party.  And, this is the best thing happening in this country right now.  If it weren't for the Tea Party, we'd have tax increases on the table right now, and we wouldn't even be talking about a balanced budget amendment. 

If anything, the Tea Party doesn't have enough influence at this point.  It is a shame.  The Tea Party is going to end up saving this country.  It may be years or even decades before that becomes understood by most and it may never be truly acknowledged by all, but the Tea Party is the only group with the guts to do the right thing.  The Tea Party members of Congress are there for the principles that got them elected.  And, guess what?  They care MORE about doing the right thing than about re-election.  That is real integrity.

3)  The Dems are upset that we haven't acknowledged their compromise in taking revenues (in other words, taxes) off the table.  Okay, duly noted.  It is a shame that you put taxes on the table in the first place.  The bottom line is that the Dems (and several Republicans) are being forced for the first time now to actually do what is better for the country instead of for their re-election. 

Here's the bottom line - this is one of those pinnacle moments in our lifetimes where we must to what is right.  The Dems want the GOP to pass the Reid bill and move on.  The GOP wants more.  In fact, the Boehner bills were both compromises already.  Neither of them really reduced spending the way that we should. They only slowed growth - and that is not the same thing.

And, the Dems were so offended the the Beohner bills included the consideration of the Balanced Budget Amendment.  So, again I ask, why is it considered a compromise to balance the budget?


So, is this a painful moment in our history?  YES.  But, that's where we are as a nation.  We need more of these painful moments until we finally do something serious about the size of government.

Obama And Reid - You Should Be Ashamed Of Yourselves

I don't know if you've heard the Dems over the past few weeks stating that Republicans are holding the economy hostage by trying to push forward the balanced budget amendment as a trade to raise the debt limit, but they've stated this multiple times (listen to Rush's show for today, he had multiple examples).

At this point, the House has sent not one, but 2 different bills to the Senate. TWO!  The second one was very much a compromise on the first one, to the point that some of the more conservative members of the House opposed it.

Both have died in the Senate.  Then, the President has the nerve to state for the millionth time that Republicans are playing partisan politics.  He is such a broken record.  He hasn't produced a single idea other than to raise taxes.  And, Reid comes along trying to play into the President's re-election campaign by writing a blank check for the rest of the Obama term with his pathetic plan.

This is an unbelievable show of kindergarten politics.  Reid and Obama have no excuse when the deadline hits.  They talk about reaching a compromise, YET THEY WON'T COMPROMISE!  They are so offended at the idea of a balanced budget amendment.  It is shocking that people that we elected into office can't even commit to balance the budget.  They see this as partisan, refuse to even vote on it, and then call for a "broad compromise."  Are you kidding me?  Do we have infants running the show up there?

I heard Utah Senator Lee on Hannity's radio show today say that what would be even worse than not raising the debt ceiling would be to allow Obama to keep spending and playing his games.  Obama is a child playing dress-up in a job that he can't handle, and it is hurting all of us. 

We have to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get this man-child out of office!  I am furious with the way he is playing with our future and our children's future.  Obama is a dishonest, incompetent, self-centered jerk.  Democrats - what is wrong with you?  How do you still support him?  What are you thinking?  He almost couldn't be doing more to hurt you than if he had that express purpose.  And, Reid is just a wet noodle doing whatever Obama tells him to.

You two are holding the economy hostage and should be ashamed of yourselves.

Obama Shifts The Blame

Obama, you give yourself away more and more in every speech.

The House plan "has no chance of becoming law," Obama said at the White House. "The time for putting party first is over. The time for compromise on behalf of the American people is now. ... It's important for everybody to step up and show the leadership that the American people expect."

Only for Obama has this been about supporting the party. The House Republicans have been working HARD to overcome the fiscal damage Obama has done to the country. Here's an idea. Start with recalling Obamacare. That's a charge on our government credit card that we cannot pay.

Under President Obama’s budget proposal, the debt held by the public is projected to increase $6.1 trillion between 2008 and 2012, from $5.8 trillion to $11.9 trillion.

At what point does Obama have to take responsibility for his actions? He can't blame Bush for everything. His high, ill-advised spending has to come to an end.

Republicans Work Hard; Obama Plays With Twitter

"House Republicans will link passage of a balanced-budget amendment to Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) last-ditch debt-ceiling plan, which GOP lawmakers said would move the measure to passage in a high-stakes vote later on Friday.

Republican lawmakers seemed confident after a vital Friday morning conference meeting that the tweaked Boehner proposal would pass muster with a restive conference.

 
“I’m smiling,” Boehner said after perhaps the most crucial conference meeting of his speakership."

While Republicans are working hard to find the best solution for America, Democrats are taking to the media.

"When President Obama said to tweet your lawmakers and ask them to compromise on raising the debt ceiling earlier on Friday, he really meant it.

Obama's campaign Twitter account, @BarackObama, has set out to spread the word of congressional Republicans who are on Twitter. "You heard the President. So here's what we're doing: throughout the day we'll post the Twitter handles of GOP lawmakers in each state," the account tweeted."

McConnell criticizes Dems for their lack of involvement on working towards a solution:

"McConnell, however, chastised Senate Democrats for sitting on their hands while the House GOP did all the heavy lifting.

"The contrast couldn't be starker. Rather than working the last few days towards a solution to this crisis the way the Republican majority in the House has, the Democratic majority here in the Senate has been wasting precious time rounding up 'no' votes to keep this crisis alive," McConnell said on the Senate floor.

"Rather than being responsible and doing their duty and come up with a bill that can actually pass, they have been busy signing people up for the "Not Good Enough Caucus" and ginning up opposition to everything else," he added."

Support Speaker Boehner

I know that there are sub-sets of the Tea Party that want Boehner to get Cut, Cap, and Balance.  At this point, that is not going to happen.  What we will get, once this is resolved, is a much better agreement than we would have gotten without Boehner.  This man walked out twice from Obama.  Twice.  He has been working relentlessly.  And, whether we like it or not, the Senate is still controlled by Democrats and so is the Presidency. 

What we do in this situation is take the stand that we should (exactly as Boehner has) and get the most we can.  Then, we need to spend the next year and a half reminding the American people that Obama wanted to raise taxes.  Then we need to remind people that the GOP kept that from happening.  Then, when Obama loses his re-election and we get the Senate, we can finish the job we started in the last election and get the bills passed that will really make a difference. 

And, I feel confident that Beohner will be right there, leading the charge.

Krugman, I've Been Censoring You For Awhile Now

Apparently, predictable liberal economist for the NYT, Paul Krugman, thinks that the media is being too fair in its reporting of the debt debate and that it should essentially censor the conservative point of view.  We expect this from him as he is known for his liberal views. Here is what he said: 

Watching our system deal with the debt ceiling crisis — a wholly self-inflicted crisis, which may nonetheless have disastrous consequences — it’s increasingly obvious that what we’re looking at is the destructive influence of a cult that has really poisoned our political system.

And no, I don’t mean the fanaticism of the right. Well, OK, that too. But my feeling about those people is that they are what they are; you might as well denounce wolves for being carnivores. Crazy is what they do and what they are.

News reports...portray it as a situation in which both sides are equally partisan, equally intransigent — because news reports always do that.

What all this means is that there is no penalty for extremism; no way for most voters, who get their information on the fly rather than doing careful study of the issues, to understand what’s really going on...And yes, I think this is a moral issue.

No, the cult that I see as reflecting a true moral failure is the cult of balance, of centrism.

However, let's tell the rest of the story.  As NewBusters correctly points out:

I'm not sure what news reports Krugman has been watching, but the ones we've been monitoring at NewsBusters concerning this matter have been anything but balanced.

The take for weeks has been that taxes must be raised to solve this problem and that it is the Republicans - and, in particular, Tea Party freshmen in the House - that are refusing to "compromise."

A new Media Research Center study on this issue found that ABC, CBS, and NBC have consistently cast the GOP as the villains in this debate.

And, to Krugman I say: I've been censoring you for awhile now.  I used to read the New York Times every day, but got sick of the Kool-Aid.

WSJ: Who Elected The Credit Agencies Anyway?

I found this article to be very interesting in the WSJ.  If you are like me, you are a little confused about who is right on the different dates being referenced by Washington and conflicting opinions about how bad things really are. 

In the palavering over the Greece bailout, an obstacle was the European Central Bank's insistence that nothing be done that might allow the ratings agencies to declare that Greece had defaulted on its debts—or at least not until the bank received taxpayer guarantees for its own holdings of Greek debt. This caused some not unreasonably to ask: Why can't the rating agencies get on the team? Who do they think they are? Where do these disreputable companies (remember their role in the subprime debacle) get off endangering the whole euro project?
One answer is that the rating agencies have a commitment to buyers and sellers of credit default swaps, designed to compensate bondholders when, say, a Greece defaults. The raters have a job to do and would be morally and legally culpable if they didn't do it. That job is to downgrade Greek debt to default status if and when Europe goes ahead with its latest bailout plan to impose losses on Greece's bondholders.
There is a parallel obligation in case the U.S. defaults on Treasury debt, but the U.S. is not going to default. Now that the prospect of a debt-ceiling stalemate is in view, it behooves us to differentiate between a government shutdown and a default.
.Even without the Treasury empowered to borrow, plenty of cash will still be coming in, plenty of assets exist that can be liquidated. John Silvia of Wells Fargo told Bloomberg TV that a partial government shutdown (which still isn't a default) might not be needed for at least two weeks beyond the artificial Aug. 2 deadline set by the Obama administration in the wholly artificial debt-ceiling crisis.
But now we have a new problem. The rating agencies, especially Standard & Poor's, have decided to join the politicians in turning an artificial crisis into a real one. S&P says it plans a U.S. debt downgrade, regardless of any debt-ceiling outcome, unless it sees a "credible" plan to reduce future deficits by $4 trillion over the next 10 years.
This has become the real worry for Wall Street, but why? America's spending debate does not remotely make it any more of a default threat than it was a week or month or year ago. America's IOUs are still completely acceptable to the markets.
Even in the long term, the threat is not to bondholders. The threat is to Americans under 50 who think they can rely on Social Security and Medicare. The threat is to countries that hope the U.S. will fight their wars for them. The threat is to K Street bandits trying to live off federal handouts.
But the debt to bondholders will be the last to be dishonored—not least because, unlike a lot of claimants, bondholders can be satisfied with inflation-ravaged dollars.

Obama Struggles To Keep His Story Straight

Obama is talking out of both sides of his mouth. On the one hand, he is holding press conference after press conference telling the American people of the catastrophic things that will occur if Congress does not get another credit card to cover his expenses. On the other hand, he's telling business not to worry and that the country will not default. Will the American people remember this superb lack of leadership and transparency in 2012??

Misguided Christian Ad

Okay, you know from reading this blog that I am a devout Christian. But, I have a huge issue with this story:

An organization of Democratically-aligned Christian leaders will launch new radio ads Tuesday attacking Republicans for neglecting Biblical lessons to care for the needy in their plans to raise the debt ceiling, according to the group.

Sojourners, a progressive Christian coalition led by Rev. Jim Wallis, will place ads narrated by local pastors on Christian and country radio stations in House Speaker John Boehner's Ohio congressional district and statewide in Kentucky, targeting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Nevada, in support of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The size of the buy has not yet been disclosed.

The minute-long spot attacking Boehner's plan says the book of Proverbs "teaches that where there is not leadership a nation falls and the poor are shunned while the rich have many friends."

First of all, the underlying compassion is duly noted.  I agree with the premise that we are taught in the Bible (many, many times) to care for the needy.  However, this misguided group does not seem to understand some fundamentals of how this principle should be adhered to.  Let me explain:
1)  Taxes are not about compassion.  They are about taking other people's money and redistributing it as seen fit by bureaucrats and partisan politicians.  True giving is when an individual makes a personal decision to sacrifice for someone else.  That decision is up to the individual, and therefore, so are the accompanying blessings.  However, there is no sacrifice or compassion in taking someone else's money and giving it away.
2) The Bible also teaches us to be self-sufficient.  The problem with government programs is they create a culture of dependency.  Once the government starts to give something away, people expect it more and more, and then when we are in a debt crisis as we are now, we can't reduce these handouts.  People won't have it.  They've come to expect it and that is that.  So, we move forward with greater and greater debt that we can't affort, all in the name of "compassion."
3)  The government should be the last place that people go for charity.  You are responsible for yourself.  If you need help and have tried everything you can to take care of yourself, go to your family, then friends, then your church and only as a last resort, put your hands in the national cookie jar.  I know that this isn't explicitly written in the Bible, but I believe that this principle is good, sound, Christian advice.  And, if we heeded it, we would be much better off.

Now, I don't want to ignore the pain of those who truly are in dire need and have exhausted other options, but the idea that we are not following Christian values by not wanting to see a redistribution of wealth is absurd.

Government Derives Power From the Consent of the Governed

"...From the consent of the governed..." That's us! That's the people! The Declaration of Independence clarifies that God has given man rights and the people instituted government. That's where the power lies...with the people of this government. I have read this paragraph dozens of times but it struck me today that the power comes from us. Let us not feel without influence. Let us not become trodden upon. It is our responsibility to stand up for what we believe in. This can be done by calling and writing representatives, exercising your right to vote, writing letters to the editor, etc. So speak up!

Geithner Says GOP "Praying For Default"

This is a very irresponsible comment for someone in his position:

The Treasury Department on Sunday accused House Republicans of “praying for default,” because they seem unwilling to raise the debt ceiling.

“Some of them are praying for default,” Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told “Fox News Sunday.”

Also, here is another scary report:

A Republican aide e-mails me: “The Speaker, Sen. Reid and Sen. McConnell all agreed on the general framework of a two-part plan. A short-term increase (with cuts greater than the increase), combined with a committee to find long-term savings before the rest of the increase would be considered. Sen. Reid took the bipartisan plan to the White House and the President said no.”

Ronald Reagan - "We The People Tell The Government What It Can Do"

This 1987 State of the Union address given by President Reagan was referenced in a book I was reading today. I appreciate Ronald Reagan's articulation of the rights of the people as well as his ability to take responsibility for his actions. The video is about 5 minutes and additional print is below.



"I've read the constitutions of a number of countries, including the Soviet Union's. Now, some people are surprised to hear that they have a constitution, and it even supposedly grants a number of freedoms to its people. Many countries have written into their constitution provisions for freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Well, if this is true, why is the Constitution of the United States so exceptional?

Well, the difference is so small that it almost escapes you, but it's so great it tells you the whole story in just three words: We the people. In those other constitutions, the Government tells the people of those countries what they're allowed to do. In our Constitution, we the people tell the Government what it can do, and it can do only those things listed in that document and no others. Virtually every other revolution in history has just exchanged one set of rulers for another set of rulers. Our revolution is the first to say the people are the masters and government is their servant. And you young people out there, don't ever forget that."

Lesson Learned For Boehner: Obama Does Not Care

In his letter to the House, Boehner states that he has ended attempts to work with the President and will instead work with Senate leadership.  Senate leaders were not invited to the White House for the meetings that Beohner walked out on yesterday. 

As he stated in his letter, Obama is not putting forth any ideas that don't involve raising taxes, so Boehner decided to walk away. 

Good for him.

The bottom line is that Obama never had any interest in reaching a resolution with Beohner.  He is only interested in his own political ambition.  As he sees it, he gets the tax hikes - he wins.  Or, Beohner storms out - he wins.  Either way, Obama sees this as a victory.  It makes him look like the guy that is rolling up his sleeves and trying to solve this issue and makes Boehner look like the bad guy.

The best thing that Boehner can do is get something passed that does not include Obama's tax increases and then send it to the president.  He will have no choice but to sign it and it will be a victory for Boehner.

Let's remember this always and never forget:  Obama cares more about himself than anyone and anything else.  This is the bottom line.  Trying to reason with this man will always end in failure.  Always.  It is not worth even trying.

Terrible Arguments Supporting Abortion

I found a site today called ProCon.org.  It has lots of topics and tries to explain the different sides issues.  I clicked on abortion and of course got completely riled up by the "Pro" arguments.  Let's look at these, shall we?

1.A woman's right to choose abortion is a "fundamental right" recognized by the US Supreme Court in the Jan. 22, 1973 case Roe v. Wade.

Okay, just to be clear, "fundamental rights" are not given to us by the US Supreme Court or any other man-made body.  They are given to us by God.  When a government thinks that they can bestow rights, they can decide to take away rights.

2.A fetus is not a human being. Abortion is terminating a pregnancy, not a baby. Personhood at conception is not a proven biological fact. Personhood begins at birth.

I've never understood how people can believe that 5 minutes before birth, we have a "thing" but after birth, we have a baby.  This argument is illogical.

3.Fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when an abortion is performed according to Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham (England). "Not only has the biological development not yet occurred to support pain experience, but the environment after birth, so necessary to the development of pain experience, is also yet to occur."

First of all, this disproves #2 above.  You have life if you are discussing whether pain can be felt or not.  Second, this doesn't support aborting a life.

4.Access to legal, professionally-performed abortions reduces injury and death caused by unsafe illegal abortions. The World Health Organization estimated in 2006 that "back-alley" abortions cause 68,000 maternal deaths each year in countries where abortion is not legal.

Not a reason to abort children.

5.The anti-abortion position is usually a religious belief and threatens the vital separation of church and state. Religious ideology should not be a foundation for law in the United States.

First, there is nothing in the constitution that discusses the "separation of church and state."  The Constitution says that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."  Disallowing abortions is not the establishment of religion.

Also, say this was a valid argument, is killing someone after they've been born legal because making it illegal is "religious ideology?"  Of course this is absurd - and so is abortion.

6.Modern abortion procedures are safe. The risk of a woman’s death from abortion is less than one in 100,000. Whereas, the risk of a woman dying from giving birth is 13.3 deaths per 100,000 pregnancies. Furthermore, a 1993 fertility investigation of 10,767 women by the Joint Royal College of General Practitioners and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found that women who had at least two abortions experienced the same future fertility as those who had at least two natural pregnancies.

This is not an argument that supports killing children.

7.Access to abortion is necessary because contraceptives are not always easily available. Women need doctor prescriptions to buy many birth control methods, such as the pill, the patch, the shot, and the diaphragm. About half of all large group-insurance plans do not cover any form of prescription contraception, and only a third cover the birth control pill. A July/Aug. 2001 Guttmacher Institute study of health care insurers found that 75% of insured women lacked coverage for contraceptive services. As of 2009, 17 million US women are completely uninsured.

Oh, boo hoo.  Seriously!?!   There are lots things that upset me about this "argument" but I'll stick with this one - what about adoption?

8.The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes abortion as a medical procedure if performed by a licensed physician in conformance with good medical practice standards. There are about 1,800 licensed physicians who provide abortions in the United States. These doctors, not politicians, should have the authority to make medical decisions regarding abortion.

The AMA does not have the right to determine that children don't have the right to live.

9.Abortion gives couples the option to choose not to birth babies with severe and life-threatening medical conditions. Fragile X syndrome, the most common genetic form of mental retardation, affects about 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females. One in 800 babies have Down Syndrome, and one in 3,500 babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis. It is not right to sentence a child to life with an acute handicap.

God sends us these children.  They are special and provide us with opportunities for growth as we take care of them.  We are not "sentencing a child to life with an acute handicap."  This is an unfortunate situation, but not an excuse to kill these children. 

10.A Sep. 2005 survey in the peer-reviewed journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health asking women why they had an abortion found that 73% of participants said they could not afford to have a baby, and 38% claimed giving birth would interfere with their education and career goals. Reproductive choice helps prevent women from experiencing financial harm.

Adoption. Adoption. Adoption. Adoption. Adoption. Adoption. Adoption.

Also, it pains me that we live in a society that someone's career goals are the reason they choose to terminate life.

11.Motherhood must never be a punishment for having sexual intercourse. President Barack Obama said in a Mar. 29, 2008 campaign speech in Johnston, Pennsylvania, "I have two daughters... I'm going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

Okay, now I'm mad!  This is one the most painful statements I've ever read.  "Punished with a baby."  What about punishing the baby!?! Obama - your daughter's mistake would also not be a reason to kill the baby! 

12.Abortion lowers crime. Some estimates claim that legalized abortion accounted for as much as 50% of the drop in murder, property crime, and violent crime between 1973 and 2001. Teenage girls, unmarried women, and poor women are more likely to have unintended pregnancies. Unwanted babies are often raised poor, increasing their chances of leading criminal lives in adulthood.

13.A baby should not come into this world unwanted. 49% of all pregnancies among American women are unintended.  Birthing children is an important lifelong decision that requires responsible consideration, preparation, and planning.

Okay, so be more responsible with when and who you have sex with, first of all.  (Why don't we seem to care about pre-marital sex anymore?).  Having said that, again, what about adoption? There are millions of people who want babies who can't have them. 

14.Abortion should be legal because it is an effective tool in population control. Malnutrition, starvation, poverty, lack of medical and educational services, pollution, underdevelopment, and conflict over resources are all consequences of overpopulation.

We do NOT have an issue with overpopulation.  There are millions and millions of miles of land in this country (between LA and NYC) that are sitting there - empty as can be.  We have resources.  This is a lame excuse.

15.The science behind the theory that abortion increases the likelihood that women will develop breast cancer is unsubstantiated. The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have all refuted the reliability of studies claiming an association between breast cancer and abortion.

What does this have to do with anything?


So, these are the best arguments they have?  I don't see anything here that even gets close to defending the immoral practice of abortion.  This stuff makes me sick.  People put these ideas in their heads as though they are legitimate arguments... I have one very simple response that refutes all of this - abortion is murder!

Tragedy In Norway

Tragedy struck Norway twice today. Once as a government building was bombed, killing 7 and again when a man went on a shooting spree and killed up to 80 campers. A relationship between the two events has not been established and little is known about the motive or relationship between the man and the victims. Our prayers go out for the family members of the victims as they struggle to make sense of this tragedy.

Debt Talk Stalls - Boehner Walks Out On Obama After Obama "Moved The Goalpost"

"House Speaker John Boehner on Friday pulled out of negotiations with President Obama on raising the nation's legal limit to borrow money, just days before an Aug. 2 deadline when the government can no longer pay all its bills and faces its first-ever possible default.

"The White House moved the goalpost," Boehner said in a news conference, claiming that the talks broke down when the White House demanded an additional $400 billion in new revenues to the $800 billion that was agreed upon, "which was going to be nothing more than a tax increase on the American people."

 
Boehner also said, "They refused to get serious about cutting spending and making the tough choices that are facing our country on entitlement reform."

Alan West Learns Lesson The Hard Way

Alan West is learning what conservative women have known for years. These groups that say they are working for equality and liberation (NOW, NAACP) only mean that if you are liberal. If you are a conservative woman, like Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann, it's okay for the media to use derogatory language and attack you in ways that insinuate femininity equals weakness. And if you are a black conservative, you are racist. Either way, you lose the support of a body of people you thought were on your side.

With that said, Mr. West, it was not appropriate for you to disagree with Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a way that pointed out her gender. You know better.

Let's move on. We've got a country to save.

Jeff Sessions Blasts Budget Myths

Today on the Senate floor, the ranking Budget Committee Republican Jeff Sessions gave a speech exposing the budget myths:

"First, I would like to address the myth that the president has a $4 trillion deficit-reduction plan. The only plan the White House has ever put on paper is his February budget, which doubles our national debt.


The president has never put a single spending cut plan on paper and he has no proposal to slash the deficit. If he does, it’s a closely guarded secret. And if such a secret plan does exist it should be made public this very afternoon. I’d like to see it. I’m sure millions of Americans feel the same.


We also have no debt plan from Senate Democrats. In fact, they haven’t even passed a budget in 813 days.


As of now, there is only one debt limit plan on paper. Only one plan available for public scrutiny and review. That’s the plan we are debating today: cut, cap, and balance. It cuts spending immediately, it caps it so it doesn’t go up, and it requires the passage of a balanced budget amendment to ensure Washington ends the deficit spending once and for all. The American people do not trust Washington to pass some grand budget deal with tax hikes that never go away and spending cuts that never materialize. …


Another myth I’d like to address is the idea that our current budget crisis is the result of two wars and a tax cut. Let’s consider that claim. The total cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, over the entire last decade, is $1.3 trillion. Again, that’s over the last decade. This year alone the deficit is expected to be $1.4 trillion dollars. War costs represent only 4 percent of total outlays over the last ten years. The total amount of money spent since the president took office is $8.5 trillion dollars. By the end of his first three years in office we will have added $5 trillion to our gross federal debt. We are borrowing almost half of what we’re spending every single day. In the last two years, non-defense discretionary spending has soared 24 percent. The stimulus package alone—enacted into law in a single day in 2009—cost more than the entire war in Iraq. Annual spending when President Bush took office was less than $2 trillion. Today, it’s almost $4 trillion. It will be almost $6 trillion by the end of the decade.


There is only one honest answer to the question over why our debt is rising so fast: out-of-control domestic spending.


Another myth that’s circulating which I’d like to address concerns the budget summary from the Gang of Six. The authors of the summary claim that their approach would reduce the deficit by $3.7 trillion. But my staff on the Budget Committee can only find $1.2 trillion in reduced spending, along with a tax increase of $1 trillion. Where does the other $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction come from? Chairman Conrad, one of the members of the Gang of Six, even says the outline has a $1.5 trillion tax cut. But this is compared against a baseline that assumes a $3.5 trillion tax increase. It’s just an accounting gimmick. The real cost of the tax changes could be an increase as large as $2 trillion.


This is why we need more than a handout—we need legislative text.


The last myth that I’d like to address is perhaps the most important of all. This is the myth that we only need about $2 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years.


Democrats have said—although no plan has ever been made public—that they could get behind a budget deal that reduces the deficit $4 trillion over the next ten years, half of it comprised of spending cuts. I’m skeptical that even this minimal level of spending cuts would occur. But even if it did, it’s not even close to what is needed to ultimately balance our budget. We are projected to spend $46 trillion over the next ten years. A $2 trillion cut is only about a four percent reduction in spending that is set to increase almost sixty percent."

Heritage Foundation: We Must Win This Battle

This is a must read from the president of the Heritage Foundation:

Fellow conservatives,

We find ourselves in the midst of an important battle, the outcome of which will be determined by decisions to be made in the immediate days ahead. We must win this fight. The debate over raising the debt limit seems complicated, but it is really very simple. Look beyond the myriad details of the awkward compromises, and you see an epic struggle between two opposing camps.

On one side are those who have come to realize it would be madness to let the political class borrow more without imposing a serious check on government spending. They have produced budgets and now an actual legislative plan to get things under control.

On the other, you find those who consider more spending, taxing, and borrowing a royal prerogative. They have produced nothing but rhetoric and empty promises and have pushed this debate to the brink.

It is a fair fight—or would be, if those trying to bring sanity to the nation’s fiscal picture were not held back by confused allies. These allies say they still want to cut spending, but (temporarily, we hope) have put love of political maneuvering ahead of the principles that brought them to Washington in the first place.

It would also help if the nation’s media clearly separated facts from opinion.

Let’s be clear. As of this moment, only one plan in Congress attempts transformative change that puts America on the path to getting spending under control before raising the debt limit. That is the Cut, Cap and Balance Act passed by the House of Representatives on Monday night. It isn’t perfect, but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

National Review: "Gang Of Six" The Worst Plan So Far

Confusion among congressional Republicans about their objectives in the debt-limit endgame has increased the possibility that they will stumble into a policy and political disaster over the next two weeks.

Only ten days ago, Republicans appeared to regain their footing when House Speaker John Boehner torpedoed the disastrous “grand bargain” that President Obama was offering. That deal would have forced Republicans to accept a massive $1 trillion tax hike and left Obamacare in place. In return, the president offered more centrally planned cuts in Medicare and Medicaid and other minor entitlement adjustments. Some deal.

But now, along comes the Gang of Six plan, and some Republicans are apparently intrigued by it. They shouldn’t be. It’s a terrible, terrible plan. It will hand the president a huge strategic victory and deliver nothing that the GOP should be seeking in this fight. It’s far, far worse than anything we have seen thus far, and certainly much worse than the McConnell plan.

Chris Christie Running For President??

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie today met in New York City with a number of Republican fundraisers who urged him to seek the 2012 GOP Presidential nomination.

Home Depot co-founder Kenneth Langone organized the gathering and someone who attended said there were 40-50 Republican heavy hitters in attendance, both in person and calling in by phone.
It was described as a who's who A-list of successful fundraisers on the Republican side. The meeting lasted over an hour and there were a number of people encouraging Governor Christie to reconsider his position on running for President in 2012 and making very strong pleas as to why he should run.

The New Jersey Governor has repeatedly and forcefully said he will not seek his party's nomination. According to someone at the meeting, Christie did not jump up and say he was running. He indicated he appreciated what they had to say and noted his decision not to run is based on a number of factors, including his four children.

You know, at CPAC, Ann Coulter said if Chris Christie didn't run, Mitt Romney would get the nomination and she predicted Romney would lose against Obama. The inference was if Christie ran, he'd win. Interesting thing to think about...

Cut, Cap, and Balance Versus Gang of Six

Just a brief summary of the two plans at play currently, provided by our friends at FoxNews and CNN.

Cut, Cap, and Balance

The House of Representatives has approved the GOP's 'Cut, Cap and Balance' plan with a vote of 234 to 190.
The bill imposes caps on federal spending as a percentage of GDP. It also allows for an increase in the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion in exchange for both the Senate and House approving a balanced budget amendment.

"Gang of Six"

"The so-called Gang of Six plan -- drafted by three Democratic and three Republican senators -- presents a possible compromise to Obama and congressional leaders as they approach a deadline for a deal on cutting federal deficits in order to gain Republican support for raising the federal debt ceiling to avoid an unprecedented default.
It would cut the nation's debt by about $3.7 trillion over the next 10 years -- similar to the president's call for roughly $4 trillion in savings.
Obama called the plan by the Gang of Six senators "broadly consistent" with his own approach to the current debt ceiling crisis because it mixes tax changes, entitlement reforms and spending reductions."

Remember, folks, $1 trillion in "revenue" equals your tax dollars being raised $1 trillion. Of course this is "broadly consistent" with the president.

It Wasn't About Bush

Mitt Romney Is Christian And So Am I

Well, I am dismayed today to see this article.  I know that people who are not LDS (Latter-Day Saint, aka Mormon) struggle with understanding the Mormon faith.  I am Mormon and just like all Mormons, I believe in Jesus Christ.  So, it is confusing to hear people say that I am not Christian.

So, to set the record straight, I am a Christian.  I have read the Bible multiple times cover to cover and studied its teachings.  I know the Book of Mormon is foreign to many.  I don't want to spend time debating the specifics of why people think that there can't be anything supplementary to the Bible (we could go back and forth forever on this one).  However, I do want to say that as a Mormon, I know in my heart that I am Christian.  I know what I believe, and I know that it isn't that different in many ways from what other Christians believe.

People of course have the right to vote for President using whatever criteria they wish.  If people are not comfortable with Mitt Romney as President due to his religion, that is their prerogative.  And, I appreciate that there are well-meaning individuals who are strongly religious and find it difficult to cope with Mormonism and its precepts.

However, I know what I believe, and I am Christian.

Obama "A Suprising President"

Thought this was great from Townhall:

Barack Obama may be the most surprising President in the history of the Republic. In his two-and-a-half years in office, no matter what has happened, it seems to have come as a surprise to him.


Shovel-ready projects? Unexpectedly, they didn't exist. The only shoveling that went on was shoveling about $700 billion of our tax dollars into projects that didn't help jump-start the economy way back in 2009.


Health Care? Obama was shocked when it took a whole year and passed the House by just seven votes - at a time when Obama had a majority of 75.


Mid-term elections? He was startled when his Close-Your-Eyes-and-Swing-at-the-Piñata style of government cost his party six seats in the U.S. Senate and an astonishing 63 seats in the U.S. House.


Increase taxes? In December 2010, during the lame duck session when Democrats still had their wide pre-election majorities, Obama seemed bewildered by Republicans insistence on keeping current tax rates and refusing to allow him to roll back what he and his pals in the popular press called the "Bush Tax Cuts."


Recovery Summer? That was supposed to have happened LAST summer. The President appears to be completely befuddled by an unemployment rate of 9.2 percent a year later.

Pro-Life Victory In New York

A federal judge on July 13 temporarily barred New York City from enforcing a new law that would cripple crisis-pregnancy centers with heavy fines and possible closures for failing to cite medical limitations.

“Pro-life pregnancy centers, which freely offer real help and hope to women and their preborn children, shouldn’t be punished by political allies of those who make their money aborting babies,” said attorney Matt Bowman of the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal group.

Judge William Pauley III called the new law “offensive to free-speech principles” and halted its enactment while a lawsuit filed on behalf of two pregnancy-care centers and a maternity home by the Alliance Defense Fund continues.

The law, titled Bill 371-A, was passed in March and backed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council speaker Christine Quinn.

The measure obligated pregnancy centers to notify women whether the center offered abortions or had licensed medical providers on staff. It also required the centers to encourage women to consult with alternate medical providers. Failure to comply with the law could result in thousands of dollars in fines, shutdown of the centers or imprisonment.

In contrast, the law did not require abortion or family-planning businesses to make any disclosures about abortion alternatives.

Pauly’s suspension of the new law comes as recent statistics show that 41% of pregnancies in New York City end in abortion.

Obama Voted Against Raising The Debt Ceiling In 2006

Guess who said this:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

You will fall out of your chair - these words were spoken by Obama.  That's right, the guy that has been spending money like it grows on trees.  In 2006, Obama said these words on the floor of the Senate trying to encourage Congress to vote against raising the debt limit to $9 trillion.  What is it now?  $14.46 trillion.

Obama, you were correct before. As you stated, the government's ability to not pay its own bills is due to "reckless fiscal policies."  We are "shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren" (think Obamacare).  And, America does, in fact, deserve better.

Poll: Obama Has Lost 1/3 Of Hispanic Support Due To His Pro-Abortion Stance

A new poll shows pro-abortion President Barack Obama has lost about one-third of the support he had from Hispanics in the 2008 presidential election, and one pro-life Hispanic leader says abortion is the reason why.

Obama hosted a meeting at the White House for Latino groups that focus on political advocacy, but, one the same day, Gallup released a new poll showing his Hispanic support down about 30 percent over the course of the last 18 months. In December 2009, Obama received a 73 percent favorable rating from Hispanics, but that dropped to 52 percent at the end of June.

The news is bad for Obama and his re-election prospects, as he is counting on winning states like Florida and New Mexico, which have large Hispanic populations, in order to retain his stranglehold on the White House. The polling results are good news for Republicans, who will be voting for a nominee to challenge the pro-abortion president.

Obama Threatens Seniors With Withholding Social Security

President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.

"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News. (from cbsnews.com)

While Obama may see this as compromise, in the rest of the US, we call it blackmail. Let's be clear about this. Within days, the media will spin this and say it is the republicans that are starving the elderly. Remember, you saw it here first. Obama has threatened SS, not the Repubs.

Dear Obama - It's Called Raising Taxes

So much for transparency....

"Call it eliminating an unfair break, or removing an unjust loophole, or even "taking a balanced approach." Just don't call it raising taxes.

As they work toward a must-do deal with Republicans on paring trillions from the deficit in order to raise the nation's debt limit, President Barack Obama and Democrats are saying almost anything to avoid the politically toxic pronouncement that they want to increase taxes."

Mr. President, you can call it what you will but the American people are not ignorant. We know what raising taxes is. There are no "loopholes" or "unfair breaks." There is a tax code that you are trying to alter that will equal Americans paying more to a government that cannot control its SPENDING.

Don't fall for it, Republican leaders.

I Guess It Is News To Some That We Are Still Mad Over Obamacare

This article is a non-story. The title is: "Obamacare still angers conservatives, focus groups say."  The article goes on to discuss that this issue will be a primary one in the next election. 

Um, ya think?  Did you have to get focus groups together to figure that out?

Obama has done a lot of stupid things while in office, but this one absolutely takes the cake.  Of all of times in our economic history, to push this massive government takeover that Palin correctly characterized as the "mother of all unfunded mandates" on the America people at our most fragile time is nothing short of immoral and the way that it was done was almost criminal.  This thing was pushed through without GOP support and without the support of the majority of Americans.  You should have a strong majority before changing the face of our health care system.

So, are conservative still mad?  You better believe it! 

And, Rassmussen just reported that a majority of Americans want this monstrosity repealed:
A majority of American voters continue to favor repeal of the health care law passed by Congress last year and the number who expect repeal has reached a new high. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 53% of Likely Voters at least somewhat favor repeal of the health care law, while 39% at least somewhat oppose it. This includes 40% who Strongly Favor repeal and 29% who are Strongly Opposed.

Instead of "Remember the Alamo," we will be chanting "Remember Obamacare" in the next election. 

Ohio Challenging Obamacare

Great job Ohio! 

Ohio-based groups have issued yet another challenge to Obamacare’s constitutionality.

More than 540,000 voters in the state have signed petitions in favor of a ballot initiative to amend Ohio’s state constitution to directly conflict with Obamacare’s individual mandate.

Pending the secretary of state’s approval, the initiative will appear on ballots statewide in November 2011, alongside a union-driven initiative to repeal Senate Bill 5, which limited public workers’ collective bargaining rights.

Ohio Liberty Council’s Chris Littleton told The Daily Caller that there are two major prongs to the health care amendment. First, it will challenge Obamacare’s individual mandate. Second, it will prevent Ohio from passing any state-based version of Obamacare.

“By definition we’re putting the Ohio constitution in conflict with federal law, meaning it has to be challenged. We’re proud of that. That’s what we wanted to do,” Littleton said.

Casey Anthony - Not Mob Rule

Sean Hannity said something I found profound on his show the other day. He talked about while many, millions it seems, are not pleased with the Casey Anthony verdict, we have to remember that this is not a mobocracy. The United States is a civilized society that has a justice system that while not perfect, is better than most. While many are angry over the verdict, it is done. Threats are not appropriate. Disparaging the jury is not appropriate. We are not a mob. We are citizens of America and as such we have respect for the laws of the land.

Lisa and I believe strongly that when articulated correctly, Americans respond to conservative values. This blog is an opportunity to articulate those values and help Americans remember their roots. As we just passed our 2 year anniversary, it seemed appropriate to reflect back on what this blog has experienced in that time.

Note To Obama - Government Did Not Invent Twitter

I loved this so much, I had to repost it.  Amen to the last paragraph!

What we want to focus on is advanced manufacturing that combines new technology, so research and development to figure out how are we going to create the next Twitter, how are we going to create the next Google, how are we going to create the next big thing, but make sure that production is here.
Funny, I don’t remember the government being at all involved in the rise of either Google or Twitter, but Barry thinks the Big Government deserves some credit? And based on that credit Big Government must be in charge of economic decisions because the Next.Big.Thing can only come from them?

Rush Limbaugh Comments on Casey Anthony Case

I worked hard to avoid as much of the media frenzy on the Casey Anthony case as possible.  But, I saw Rush's comments and had to re-post.  He is right:

Some of the hosts of the cable news shows, you know, what I don't understand about it is they're all card-carrying liberals. When does the death of a child bother them? I've never seen them get so upset over the death of a child. If the child had died, what, two years earlier in the womb, this woman would be a star, she'd be a hero, and, folks, I don't think that's cliche to say. And I don't think it's a cheap attempt at humor. I think that while it may be uncomfortable to hear, one of the reasons it's uncomfortable to hear is that there is an element of truth in it. You people in the media, if you really, really think she's guilty and you want to feel better about this, just tell yourselves that she just waited a couple years to get an abortion and you'll feel better. You're feeling uncomfortable, right?

Even Snerdley winced a little bit at that. Why did you wince, Snerdley? It's brutal to hear. Exactly right. It's brutal to hear. So is abortion. Abortion is brutal, never characterized that way. And the reason it's brutal is because there's an element of truth in it. I just wanted to put it out there. Pure and simple, nothing more, plus my bumper sticker idea.

Government Revenues = Taxes...Any Questions??

Let's be clear. Any time President Obama talks about increasing revenues, he is not talking about making more money from the nation-wide bake sale. He is talking about raising YOUR taxes. When he and Harry Reid discuss "shared sacrifice," they mean YOU pay more money. When it comes to talks about boosting the economy and balancing the budget, the language may not always be transparent, but the most basic equation that is important to remember is government revenues = your taxes.

Obama's Twitter Townhall a Perfect Example of His Incompetence

President Obama responded to questions posted on Twitter during a town hall forum, with Jack Dorsey, a Twitter executive, moderating.


So, here we go - the President of the United States takes a long-needed break from golfing to sit down and do some serious business: taking tweets and answering questions in his usual unsubstantial manner, with plenty of condescension and bravado.

First, Obama says at the beginning: I'm going to make history here as the first President to live tweet. Uh, yeah, since no one heard of Twitter until you were President, so there really isn't anyone else that could have been the first one. And, by the way, who cares?

First question: In order to reduce the deficit, what costs would you cut and what investments would you keep? 

And, his answer?  (I know, we are all at the edge of our seats)  He says:  And the reason I thought this was an important question is, as all of you know, we are going through a spirited debate here in Washington, but it's important to get the whole country involved, in making a determination about what are the programs that can help us grow, can create jobs, improve our education system, maintain our clean air and clean water, and what are those things that are a waste that we shouldn’t be investing in because they're not helping us grow or create jobs or creating new businesses. And that debate is going to be heating up over the next couple of weeks, so I'd love to hear from the American people, see what thoughts they have.

In other words, he has no answer to the question.  Nothing.  He says he is going to ask us what we think, you know, since he hasn't had time to come up with a real answer or because he hasn't been listening to what millions of Tea Party supporters have been saying already.

Next question: What mistakes have you made in handling this recession and what would you do differently?  First he goes on and on about how right he was to bailout the auto industry and usher in his socialist policies. What did he say were his mistakes?  I'm not making this up: he said he should have explained to the American people that the recovery would take a long time (then he goes on to explain that even economists didn't know how long the recession would last - so how was he supposed to know?).  Then, he says that the government should have done more in the area of housing. 

I almost fell out of my chair when I read this.  Let's pause and consider the first answer to this question.

This is the President of the United States.  This is the man who positioned himself as the great hope of the modern age who was going to fly in on his magic carpet and save the world.  This is the man who had majorities in both the House and Senate.  This is the man who took that majority and thrust Obamacare on a nation struggling to breath as it is.  This is the man who travelled the world apologizing for America's arrogance while himself never once in the first 2 years reaching out to Republicans and then (arrogantly, I might add), saying that we need to "behave like grown-ups."  This is the man who spends more time on the golf course than any executive "jet-owners" as he has gotten used to calling American job creators these days.  This is the man that was supposed to come in and roll up his sleeves and take the trust that the American people had given them and work for our best interests, who instead has spent his time being the most liberal President in modern history.  And, when asked what he could have done better to deal with the economy, he says he should have told us it would last a long time so that we would be "better prepared."

Seriously?!?  This is outrageous.  This is ludicrous. This is exactly why he needs to be fired next year.  This man is not fit for his office.  Mr. Obama - are you saying that had you told Americans it would last a long time that they would have said, "Oh, okay.  I'm so glad you told me.  I just got laid off from my job, I'm getting kicked out of my house and can't afford to feed my children.  But, now that you've told me this will be my situation for a long time instead of a short time, I feel so much better."   Are you kidding me?!?

I'll comment on the rest of the town hall in a future post.  I have to take a brake from this ridiculousness.

What is so sad is that this really is a tragic moment for us.  Millions of Americans are impacted by the fact that we have an incompetent President.  Had he been elected in better economic times, we may have been able to absorb his policies for a time until a more qualified President could be elected to undo the damage.  However, given the frailty of our economy, Obama's lack of leadership is even more detrimental.

I was perusing Chris Christie videos and thought this was a good one. I say to all looking for the GOP nomination - if you can't come up with the the backbone that Christie has - it doesn't matter if you win the nomination, you will never be president.

American Exceptionalism - Ronald Reagan Had It Right

There was a wonderful posting on The Radio Patriot. I have pasted more below but I wanted to post the part that jumped out at me:

This is a joke, right?

The joke is on Zero and it’s about time we began treating him as one. Reagan is a towering giant. Zero is a midget, a midget of history."

Doesn't she hit it right on the head?! America is great. It has always been great. We need a leader that represents it's people and is qualified to maintain this legacy of exceptionalism!

This morning at Grosvenor Square in front of the American Embassy in London, England, I was privileged to be at the unveiling ceremony of the bronze statue of President Ronald Reagan, and heard him praised as one of the most beloved men and finest presidents in US history.

Yet it was not simply the praise of past greatness that was so inspiring – it was the optimism for America’s future. Condoleezza Rice spoke so clearly of the moral certainty of Ronald Reagan in his goal of ridding the world of Soviet Communism – a goal in which he so triumphantly succeeded.

We forget how dark those days were, she said, when at the onset of the Reagan presidency the Soviets were on the verge of victory over us and hope of our winning the Cold War seemed ridiculously Pollyannish.

What we need right now, said Condi, is an infusion of Ronald Reagan’s unquenchable optimism that America’s best days are in her future, not her past, that a moral certainty in America’s principles and values will triumph over darkness.

Condi is right. This is exactly what we need on this Fourth of July. Zero will never get a statue in any of the world’s great capitals. He will never be lauded and revered as Reagan was this morning. He will be despised as a ludicrous failure, forgotten at the bottom of the presidential barrel along with (and below) Jimmy Carter.

If President Reagan were with us today, he would look upon headlines like the one on Drudge today – The United States of Gloom- with talk about “widespread pessimism… unprecedented uncertainty and self doubt” as a nation, shake his head, and tell us this is absurd. If America could defeat the Soviet Union and win the Cold War, there should be little doubt it can defeat a bunch of pathetically incompetent Democrats.

And we are not going to let that birthright of freedom be stolen by some grinning schmuck who hates us for it. We are going to win it anew.

My suggestion is, amidst the fireworks and barbeques and flag-waving fun – all of which is great – that you take the time to feel good about America."
