I know that there are sub-sets of the Tea Party that want Boehner to get Cut, Cap, and Balance. At this point, that is not going to happen. What we will get, once this is resolved, is a much better agreement than we would have gotten without Boehner. This man walked out twice from Obama. Twice. He has been working relentlessly. And, whether we like it or not, the Senate is still controlled by Democrats and so is the Presidency.
What we do in this situation is take the stand that we should (exactly as Boehner has) and get the most we can. Then, we need to spend the next year and a half reminding the American people that Obama wanted to raise taxes. Then we need to remind people that the GOP kept that from happening. Then, when Obama loses his re-election and we get the Senate, we can finish the job we started in the last election and get the bills passed that will really make a difference.
And, I feel confident that Beohner will be right there, leading the charge.
It's not conservative to live to fight another day if the reason you're still around is because you acquiesce. They're not gonna be able to lay a finger on Obama over taxes, because that's his default position and he never budged. Stood his ground and won his base. The Republicans will have, at best, a pyrrhic victory....
ReplyDeleteI hear you. You are right that he never budged. But even the most staunch Dem can see his lack of effectiveness. No leadership at all.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm not on the same page that that Boehner acquiesced. He can't make the Senate pass the House plan... I definately would like to see more leadership out of McConnell, though.
But, your point is well taken. The GOP does need to continue to flex our muscles in these debates.
